WIPEOUT CANADA is a hilarious game show where contestants run the world’s largest -- and funniest -- obstacle course. Each week, 20 new competitors tackle the course in an effort to be named Wipeout Canada Champion. They come from all walks of life, shapes and sizes - male and female, young and old, fit and not-so-fit.
Our hilarious hosts provide running commentary as the contestants navigate the course. In the qualifier, 20 contestants run a four-part obstacle course including challenges like the "Sucker Punch" (a wall of boxing gloves that randomly punch contestants as they try to run past) and the fan favourite "Big Red Balls". Only the 12 with the fastest times move on to the next round. Along the way, spectacular wipeouts occur!
In the second round, contestants face off against the wily arm of ‘The Sweeper’ as they compete against one another to stay on their feet and out of the water. Six will be swept off their platforms and eliminated. The remaining six move on. As a bonus, the contestant who stays on The Sweeper the longest gets an automatic ‘bye’ to the final Wipeout Zone, earning the right to bypass the third round.
Round three is the "Dizzy Dummies", where contestants are strapped to a spinning machine before making a desperate dash to be the first to cross the "Topple Towers". Losers have to do it again (and again). The slowest two contestants are eliminated and the top three move on to the final round, joining the lucky winner of "The Sweeper".
Competition gets fierce in the final round, The Wipeout Zone. The final four compete separately on a giant obstacle course at night, full of lights, action and rushing water. The contestant who reaches the final platform and hits the buzzer in the quickest time is declared Wipeout Champion and takes home the spectacular grand prize.
On its premiere night in the United States, Wipeout scored the highest premiere rating of any new show in Summer 2008, beating out competing veteran summer shows. As the season progressed, Nielsen Media Research shows it kept near the top of the 18-49 demographic.
The second season premiered with an audience of 9.69 million, besting its first season average. Wipeout’s third American season will premiere in June of 2010.
WIPEOUT CANADA joins the ranks of over 30 international versions of this game show phenomenon. Most versions are called Wipeout!, but some countries get more creative. The Spanish version is ‘Guaypaut!’, which, when you say it in a Spanish accent, sounds exactly right. In Germany, the show’s title translates roughly to, ‘Wipeout: Do Not Howl, Run!’. In Mexico, it’s ‘Slide’. In Chile and Argentina, the title is simply, ‘Man Overboard’.
But whether it’s in Lithuania, Brazil, Croatia, or Estonia, WIPEOUT speaks the international language of hilarious.
