When I first went in to audition for Wipeout Canada, I wasn't sure what to expect -- or what the producers were looking for. I saw sportscasters, comedians, actors, and even straight ahead newsmen at the first call.
I quickly learned that it was all about chemistry between potential hosts. I had a callback, and then another, each a few weeks apart, which gave me time to really figure out what sort of persona I wanted to bring to the table. At the end of the day, I think I've got a style that is complimentary to Jonathan's, without a lot of overlap. He's more the voice (and face) you can trust, steering the ship, and occasionally shaking his head at some of the antics we see from the contestants, while I'm a bit more up for anything, and probably more willing to sound like a jackass. I look at my hosting persona as a mix between a Daily Show version of a sports announcer, and a straight-up carnival-barking game show host. Now, whether that makes me a GOOD Wipeout host is really up to the audience.
So, what does it take to do the job right? For me, it's "try to be as good at hosting as Jonathan Torrens." (And a collective "awwwwwww" runs through the crowd, and a single tear runs out of your eye, blinding you temporarily.)
