A lot of people know my fellow host Jonathan Torrens from his work on Jonovision, or Street Cents, or TV with TV's
Jonathan Torrens, but I bet a lot of people are like, "Ennis Esmer? Who is this guy?" Or, "Who let that nice Arab fellow on the
TV?"
Wipeout Canada is my first time working on something this fast-paced in my capacity as a host. I've hosted a bunch of things before, but
nothing as jam-packed with dialogue as this. I used to host a late night variety show on Toronto 1 (now SunTV) called “The Toronto Show” which was a mix of
stand-up comedy, sketch, and musical acts. We would tape between 4-6 shows a week, so it taught me a lot about doing things on the fly -- and rolling with
mistakes -- because we taped in front of a studio audience. Often we'd run over or short of our time before commercial break, so I'd have to either fill
time, or cut something short on the fly in the prompter. That was the hardest I think I had ever worked in this industry... up to that point.
I've also hosted many live events over the past few years. I've been the host of Telefilm's Pitch This! Competition at the Toronto International
Film Festival for the past three years, and for the last two years, I've hosted one of the industry nights for the Gemini Awards. What would be awesome is
to get the chance to co-host the televised Gemini Awards with Jonathan. Oh, the fun we'd have. And there'd be such colourful language!
Wipeout Canada premieres Sunday, April 3 at 8pm ET/PT, only on TVtropolis.
