''Consider the Jerknerd'': Ennis Weighs in on This Week's Theme Episode
Posted by Ennis Esmer at  9:00 AM 04/16/2011

For Wipeout Canada, this is one of those special milestone weeks in reality TV/game show programming: the theme episode.

Theme days are part of a historic tradition. A tradition as old as... well... I remember my dad's office had Hawaiian Hump Days when I was a kid. (At least I think that's why he dressed like Jimmy Buffett every Wednesday.) And how better to create a themed episode of a TV show than to pit two seemingly contradictory demographics against each other? There’s "Heroes vs. Villains" on Survivor. There's "Pros vs. Joes" on Pros vs. Joes. And I don't know about you, but I get goosebumps anytime the Orlando Magic play the Washington Wizards. I mean, how can Magic beat Wizards? Heck, I get excited anytime nominally related sports teams face off. Cavaliers vs. Mavericks? There would be much slapping of the face with white gloves, I imagine. Phoenix Suns vs. Miami Heat? The mind reels.

Then there's this week’s episode of Wipeout Canada: "Beauties vs. Geeks". AKA Jocks vs. Nerds. Hotties vs. Notties. People who can get into clubs vs. People who can get into clubs they invented. Now, it may seem obvious who you should root for. It works so well on paper: shy bookish type defeats beauty queen or football hero to win salvation for all nerds everywhere. But I got news for ya: Some of these nerds are jerks. I'd go so far as to call them "Jerknerds" (a term I coined in grade 12 after being mercilessly ridiculed by some rather prolific math students for even bothering to show up to the exam, as I had missed so much of the year's classes that I was doomed to fail, a point that tickled them to no end, and really hurt my feelings).

Jerknerds are geeks, to be sure, but they're geeks who are so comfortable in their own skin, they don't need your damn pity. They like who they are. They're just as proud as the beauties, with their perfect skin, toned abs, and almost total lack of depth of character aside from "swagger". And that's what's refreshing about this weekend's episode. If nothing else, it will teach us that everybody, from the coolest cool dude to the most introverted loner, has the capacity in them to be a jerk. And we all. Fall. Down.

Watch "Beauties vs. Geeks" on Wipeout Canada this Sunday at 8pm ET/PT on TVtropolis.

As kung fu man, i will perform my flying back kick and then will chop to the left and to the right... chop chop. Then I will be the only only contestant ever to do a kung fu front roll. No expectations though because I am a white belt... but I am moving up. Anyway, I am in!!!! Please let me know what I need to do to apply. Thanks. Kung Fu Miles

Just looking at the contestant list for Wipeout Canada #3 and saw that Tony Norman from Calgary is listed there. I know him but did not see him on the episode at all. Do you normally completely cut people out of your shows?
